Although/ Though/ Even though/ Despite/ In spite of là những liên từ đều mang nghĩa là mặc dù, dẫu cho. Câu có những từ này thường mô tả hai hành động trái ngược nhau, thể hiện sự nhượng bộ. Mặc dù mang ý nghĩa giống nhau nhưng chúng lại có những cách sử dụng và cấu trúc ngữ pháp khác biệt. 1. Định nghĩa

Although/ Though/ Even though/ Despite/ In spite of là những liên từ đều mang nghĩa là mặc dù, dẫu cho. Câu có những từ này thường mô tả hai hành động trái ngược nhau, thể hiện sự nhượng bộ.

Ví dụ:

• He refused to buy a new car although he had enough money. (Anh ấy từ chối mua một chiếc xe mới dù anh ta có đủ tiền.)
• Although it was raining, he walked to the station. (Mặc dù trời mưa,anh ta vẫn đi đến ga.)
• Despite the bad weather, we still play basketball. (Mặc dù thời tiết xấu, chúng tôi vẫn chơi bóng rổ.)
• Hannah still goes to work in spite of being sick. (Hannah vẫn đi làm dù cô ấy đang ốm.)

2. Cấu trúc và cách dùng

Although / Though / Even though

• Thường đứng trường một mệnh đề để tạo thành mệnh đề nhượng bộ.
• Mệnh đề nhượng bộ diễn đạt nội dung trái ngược với thông tin ở thành phần chính của câu.

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

• Although the food was boring, the hotel was excellent. (Mặc dù đồ ăn dở tệ nhưng đó quả là một khách sạn xuất sắc.)
• The hotel was excellent though the food was boring. (Khách sạn đó thật tuyệt vời thế nhưng đồ ăn thì dở tệ.)

Chú ý:

• Mệnh đề nhượng bộ và mệnh đề chính hoàn toàn có thể đổi chỗ cho nhau.
• Tuy nhiên khi dùng Although/ though/ even though ở đầu câu cần lưu ý phải có một dấu phẩy ở giữa hai mệnh đề.
• Trong câu có although/ though /even though thì không được dùng từ but.
• Though cũng có thể đứng cuối câu, ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy, và vẫn mang nghĩa “tuy nhiên” (nhưng chỉ thường được dùng trong văn nói).

Despite / In spite of

• Không đứng trước mệnh đề mà chỉ đứng trước một danh từ, cụm danh từ hoặc một danh động từ để tạo nên cấu trúc nhượng bộ.

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

• The hotel was excellent in spite of the boring food. (Khách sạn đó thật tuyệt vời mặc dù đồ ăn dở tệ.)
• Despite the boring food, the hotel was excellent. (Mặc dù đồ ăn dở tệ nhưng đó quả là một khách sạn tuyệt vời.)

Despite the fact that / In spite of the fact that

• Tương tự với cấu trúc despite/ in spite of, despite the fact that/ in spite of the fact that diễn tả sự nhượng bộ, đối lập ở hai mệnh đề trong câu. Hai cấu trúc này cùng mang nghĩa là “mặc dù”. Tuy nhiên, cần lưu ý rằng sau despite/ in spite of the fact that là một “mệnh đề” thay vì cụm danh từ hay V-ing.

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

• Despite the fact that she’s not good at English, she still tries to talk with native speakers. (Mặc dù thực tế là cô ấy không giỏi tiếng Anh, nhưng cô ấy vẫn cố gắng giao tiếp với người bản xứ.)
• I have a very good feeling for her in spite of the fact that we just met for the first time. (Tôi rất có thiện cảm với cô ấy mặc dù thực tế chúng tôi mới gặp nhau lần đầu.)

Exercise 1: Điền although/ though/ despite/ in spite of vào chỗ trống.

1. Salim went to school alone, ________ she knew that it was very unsafe.

Exercise 2: Tìm và sửa lỗi sai (nếu có)

1. Although being a poor, Binh learnt very well.
2. Although the heavily storm, I still went to school last Monday.
3. Despite Sonay had completed this project, he went to sleep.
4. Despite Minh Anh was thirsty, she didn’t drink much.
5. The flight wasn’t postponed although his foggy.

Exercise 3: Hoàn thành câu bên dưới chính xác bằng cách sử dụng Although/ despite/ in spite of.
